About Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is the heart shaped land that lies in the heart of southeast Europe. It is here that eastern and western civilizations met, sometimes clashed, but more often enriched and reinforced each other throughout its long and fascinating history. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people. It prides itself on its hospitality and treating the guests as if they were family members. “Bosnia” covers the north and center of the country whereas the southern region is named “Herzegovina”.
Traditional or modern, the Bosnian culinary adventure will fulfil all your expectations as the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina take eating and drinking very seriously. Traditional food is mainly meat based, meat is well prepared and often organic. In the urban centers a wide range of great quality restaurants serving mainly Italian, Mediterranean, Viennese and traditional cuisine can be found. Please note that you have no worries when drinking the water in BiH from the tap or elsewhere. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, drinking coffee is the backbone of social life. The traditional coffee is “Bosnian coffee” – it is similar to what the rest of the world calls Turkish coffee, and it is served with oddly-shaped sugar cubes and “rahat lokum” (Turkish delight).
The national currency is convertible mark - BAM (1€ = 1,95 BAM). The majority of establishments and ATM will accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.). US dollars, British pounds and other major currencies can be exchanged at the banks and exchange offices that are present in the city. Most banks do not have a fixed fee, but take a percentage of the total amount.
Three official languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language
Travel documents: valid Passport
Full of vitality and fun, Sarajevo has all the advantages of a capital city, with the friendly atmosphere of a small town. It is cosmopolitan in outlook, but with local charm and warm hospitality. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, its compact city centre is full of clubs, cafés, theatres and shops.
Sarajevo is a city of contrasts. You can feel the pulse of history, and the buzz of a modern metropolis. You can explore unique boutiques in the old Turkish market, and buy international brands in brand new shopping centres.
For those who like activity and exercise, there are numerous gyms, sports centres, and an Olympic swimming pool in town, with the Olympic mountains of Jahorina and Bjelašnica only 30 minutes away, for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. In Ilidža, on the outskirts of Sarajevo, where the Conference venue is located, there are spas and springs at the foot of Mount Igman. The beautiful Adriatic coast is a favourite weekend destination for everyone.
Throughout the year, Sarajevo is a city of festivals, The biggest Hollywood names and stars from all over the world walk the red carpet at the famous Sarajevo Film Festival, and the city hosts free entertainment during Baščaršija Nights in July. There’s Jazz Fest and the renowned theatre festival MESS in the fall, then the Sarajevo Winter Festival with art, music, dance and drama throughout the cold months, while spring brings poetry and alternative theatre to town. Throughout the year, in its many theatres, galleries, concert halls and museums, audiences can choose either the traditional or the cutting edge.
Tourists on a budget can take advantage of all that Sarajevo has to offer – the restaurants are cheap, the fast food is organic, and café culture rules. You can walk almost anywhere, or hop on a tram or a trolley bus.
There is definitely something special about Sarajevo. Visitors fall in love with it, artists are inspired by it, and those who have left it yearn to return to it. Sarajevo has always been a centre of alternative culture, comedy, music and art – it has always been a vibrant mix of east and west, a crossroads of culture and history, famed for its unbreakable spirit.
